Maintaining a website is a tough task. However, having a few pointers always help. The following tips will go some way in helping you maintain your WordPress site.

  1. Use caching
Install the WP Super Cache plugin and enable the Gzip option. This will load only the appropriate cached content to visitors rather than loading every single script and element of your WordPress site.
  2. Reduce the number of CSS files to as few as possible
Combine multiple custom CSS files into a big one. The lesser the number of individual CSS files the theme needs to read the faster it will load. Simply copy and paste the code from individual CSS files into the main “style.css” file or a “custom.css” file in your theme.
  3. Reduce the number of Javascript files to as few as possible
Combine multiple “.js” files into a big one. The lesser the number of “.js” files the theme needs to read the faster it will load. You can copy and paste the code from individual Javascript files into a new single Javascript file.
  4. Use as few plugins as possible
The lesser the number of plugins that need to load the more stable your WordPress site can be. Eliminate the need for too many plugins by copying and pasting code, hand coding the functionality into your theme, using a theme that has the functionality built-in, or having it designed or customized for you. This does not mean that you do not use any plugins, especially since this article suggests using plugins for WordPress optimization—just stick to only the essential ones rather than random sidebar widgets and what not.
  5. Check for broken links
Use the Broken Link Checker plugin to check for broken links. Any broken links are displayed on the dashboard of the WordPress website admin. Or even better, set the plugin to run regularly and automatically email you if broken links are found. Broken links are really unprofessional and can appear through no fault of yours. For example, if an external web page you link to changes its URL or is deleted then a broken link will appear on your site. The Broken Link Checker plugin prevents broken links from going unnoticed.
